مع حركة دوران القمر الشهرية حول الأرض، تتغير المساحة المضاءة من سطح القمر المرئي مما يؤدي الى تغير شكل القمر باستمرار في كل ساعة. يأخذ القمر بين ٢٨-٢٩ يوما أرضيا لإكمال دورة كاملة حول الأرض. هذه الدورة تضع القمر أحيانا بين الأرض و الشمس، وأحيانا في الجهة المقابلة للشمس. عندما يكون موقع القمر بين الارض و الشمس، لا يمكننا ان نرى السطح المضاء للقمر، أو نرى جزءا بسيطا جدا منه، و هذا يكون شكل هلال بداية الشهر. عندما يكون موقع القمر في الجهة المقابلة للشمس (أي ان الأرض واقعة بين الشمس و القمر) فإننا نرى كل السطح المضاء على القمر، و هذا يكون شكل البدر منتصف الشهر. تلاحظ في يوم البدر ان الشمس تكون على جهة من الأفق و القمر على الجهة المقابلة و ذلك عند الشروق و الغروب، اي ان الأرض تكون بينهما. بعد ذلك ياخذ القمر من ١٤-١٥ يوما للعودة بين الارض و الشمس لينهي رحلته من حيث بدأ و ينتهي الشهر ليبدأ شهر جديد.

قال تعالى:

وَالشَّمْسُ تَجْرِي لِمُسْتَقَرٍّ لَّهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ تَقْدِيرُ الْعَزِيزِ الْعَلِيمِ (٣٨) وَالْقَمَرَ قَدَّرْنَاهُ مَنَازِلَ حَتَّىٰ عَادَ كَالْعُرْجُونِ الْقَدِيمِ (٣٩) لَا الشَّمْسُ يَنبَغِي لَهَا أَن تُدْرِكَ الْقَمَرَ وَلَا اللَّيْلُ سَابِقُ النَّهَارِ ۚ وَكُلٌّ فِي فَلَكٍ يَسْبَحُونَ (٤٠)

The Moons view from Earth changes constantly as its illumination changes due to its motion around the Earth. The Moon orbits the Earth completing one full cycle almost every 28 days. When the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth, we dont see the Moons illumination, or see a very small portion of it. When this happens it marks the beginning of a new Moon. When the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon, we see a full Moon as the sunlight illuminates the whole Moon disk. When a full Moon occurs, youll see the Sun on one side of the horizon, and the Moon is on the other side during sunset. This marks the middle of the Moon cycle. From there on, it takes almost 14-15 days for the Moon to go back to to the position between the Earth and the Sun, marking the end of the 28~29 days cycle. This 28~29 days cycle constructs one month in Islamic calendar, which consists of 12 months total per year.
